10 Wardrobe Staples You Should Thrift Instead
Classic wardrobe staples are those pieces that are super functional and can work with lots of outfits, as well as stand the test of time and still be relevant year after year. These staples are so important to a great wardrobe because they are the basics you’ll build many outfits from. Every year blogs and magazines release the same list of the same few silhouettes and why they’re so great, but how do you know where to invest and where to save? Check out my list below to see which pieces you can easily find high quality versions of in thrift stores at less substantial costs.
Easy Jeans
Thrift stores, especially larger stores like Salvation Army, ALWAYS have plenty of denim. It may take some time to look through to find the right size and style you’re looking for, but if you have ever shopped for jeans, you know that when you find the perfect pair, it was well worth the search! I also like to peek in the men’s section when I’m looking for the perfect oversized “boyfriend” fit.
Trench Coats
I always feel like a character in Casablanca when I wear my trench coat. My classic khaki coat was a name-brand thrift score under $10 in the off season. It even has a zip-out flannel lining to make it more versatile for different weather. Finds like mine are not uncommon as trench coats have been around for quite a while.
Trouser Pants
While not as plentiful as jeans, the trouser pant is still an easy find in most thrift stores. Depending on your job, these may be something you wear every day, or only occasionally, but a good pair of dressy pants is always good to have on hand. Pick up a simple quality-made pair and have them tailored to you for a flawless look that you will wear for years.
Statement Blazers
Every thrift store is stocked with a hoard of 80’s blazer in every color, texture and pattern. A blazer elevates the look of any outfit and is a versatile layering piece. My personal favorites are lightweight blazers. Years ago, I thrifted a plain white linen blazer, cut out the shoulder pads, and did a DIY black ombre dye job on it. I had a completely unique piece I loved that went with so many outfits and cost me next to nothing!
Leather Pieces
If you choose to wear leather or fur, the best way to purchase these items is secondhand, so as to reduce the demand for animal products. Because animal skins are long lasting and more expensive, they are often made into more classic silhouettes to begin with, so it’s easy to find great items in thrift stores.
Costume Jewelry
The absolute best way to find unique jewelry is by shopping secondhand. In my personal experience, I’ve had less consistent luck at large thrift stores and found more of a selection at smaller church or charity run thrift stores. Always be sure to check for missing stones or links, and make sure the clasps work.
Button Downs
Whether you’re looking for flannel, chambray, or a solid, button downs are a classic wardrobe staple that don’t change much over time. Because they’re such a common piece, thrift stores are usually well stocked in many colors and fabrics. Don’t forget to peruse the men’s section, as well!
Chunky Knits
Sweaters are another category that take up a big chunk of thrift stores. You can easily find any color, texture, or weight. I love chunky knits from thrift stores because the thicker styles are usually more durable, and sometimes even hand knitted! When buying knits secondhand, be sure to check for any holes or pulls. Most pilling can be cut off with a razor.
Denim Jackets
These versatile jackets are another classic staple that don’t change silhouettes more than every thirty years or so. Whether you prefer an oversized or a fitted style, thrift stores are a treasure trove of jean jackets in any wash.
Band Tees
This could be said for any graphic tee, honestly. Celebrity “merch” is such a popular thing with the *youths* right now, but for those of us that might be a few years older, the best way to find shirts with our favorite bands and athletes on them is by thrifting!
There are so many great reasons to buy clothing secondhand. I love knowing that I can have a well-rounded wardrobe with great basics to create infinite outfits while saving money and keeping clothing from going to a landfill.
