DIY LoveShackFancy Inspired Ruffle Skirt
One of the pieces I’ve been seeing over and over this summer is the LoveShackFancy style ruffle skirts, like the Ruffle Mini Skirt and Zeta Skirt. American Eagle also created a very similar look for less with their Rock’n’Ruffle Mini Skirt in their Aerie line. These skirts have become such a summer staple and I’ve seen them styled in tons of casual looks. Tuck in a t-shirt or sweater, or try a tee knotted just above the waistband. A simple pair of sneakers completes this fun and comfy look!
While I love my knockoff AE skirt, I knew I wanted to make my own version to try and get a more voluminous ruffled look. This turned out to be such a simple and quick DIY, I surprised myself!
You will need:
Basic Smocked Ruffle Skirt (I used one similar to this)
Wide Scalloped Lace in a matching color. I purchased 6 yards and used almost all of it. It will depend on the skirt you use for your base.
Sewing Machine and Matching Thread
Instructions:
First, measure around the edges of each tier of your skirt to determine how much lace you will need. I used almost 6 yards for my two-tiered skirt. Ruffles can be deceiving!
Starting at one of the side seams, pin the lace onto the skirt so that the bottom edge of the lace meets or just barely hangs over the hem of the skirt tier. You don’t want to add length to the skirt. When you get all the way around the skirt, cut off the lace, leaving an extra inch. Fold the raw edge under by half an inch so that the folded edge covers the beginning of the lace. Repeat for any other skirt tiers and use a simple straight stitch on your sewing machine to secure the lace in place. You can do this by hand, but it will take quite a while!
As an extra finishing touch, I flipped the lace tier up and joined the raw edges of the lace with my sewing machine, but because of the volume of the lace, you could probably get away with skipping this step.
Easy as that. In less than an hour, and for under $50, you have your own custom LoveShackFancy inspired ruffle skirt!
How does my version compare to the original? Would you wear it? If you tried this tutorial, leave a comment and let me know or tag me on social media. I would love to see!
